Protecting Poultry Workers

Safe food starts with safe workplaces

Two-year effort has protected health and safety of more than 200,000 workers

Beginning in 2013, we led a two-year advocacy campaign by workers, civil rights leaders, and consumer groups to prevent a federal regulatory change that would have harmed poultry workers—a majority of whom are Hispanic—by speeding up production lines. The proposed rule would have allowed companies to speed up production from 140 to 175 birds per minute—a 25% increase—in exchange for adopting new food safety measures.

If the regulatory change had passed, workers would run increased risk of physical injury on the job—injuries that could put them out of work and jeopardize the financial well-being of their families. The successful prevention of this rule protects the health and safety of more than 200,000 workers—34% of whom are Latino.
