WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Thursday, April 28, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) will unveil its High School Democracy Project, a program aimed at creating civic awareness and encouraging voter participation among young Latinos. The pilot program, which will be released at a morning event at East Austin College Prep, will be rolled out at several Texas charter schools that are part of NCLR’s extensive national Affiliate Network. Media are invited to attend the morning presentation and observe the curriculum in action as an East Austin College Prep teacher implements one of the lessons.

Every year, nearly 900,000 young Latino U.S. citizens turn 18 and become eligible to vote. According to Pew Research Center, Latino millennials will account for nearly 44 percent of the eligible Hispanic voters in the 2016 elections. This demographic growth makes young Latinos a much sought-after and increasingly influential voting segment. Texas, home to the second-largest Latino population, just after California, also boasts a large under-18 population, 95 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.

Superintendent Salvador Cavazos will deliver introductory remarks and will be joined by Janet Hernandez, NCLR Senior Civic Engagement Project Manager, who will discuss the importance of the Latino youth vote as the program is unveiled, as well as several students.
