PHILADELPHIA—NCLR (National Council of La Raza) policy experts will join Pennsylvania Latino leaders at a roundtable discussion this Thursday, March 9, where they will discuss a new Latino economic policy agenda geared at protecting the gains and contributions of Latinos in the Keystone State. Presenters will examine how federal policies that promote the economic security of hardworking Latinos have bolstered the Pennsylvania economy, offer insight on the legislative landscape for the 115th Congress and release major findings from a new factsheet titled “Latinos in Pennsylvania: Protecting and Defending Progress in the Keystone State.”

Latinos in Pennsylvania have made great strides to regain their economic footing since the recession. A resilient, industrious spirit coupled with commonsense social and economic policies have been at the forefront of marked improvements across key indicators, including the rate of Latino unemployment, which decreased from 10.4 percent to 7.4 percent between 2011 and 2015, and a 10-percent growth in the number of Latino homeowners during the same period. Federal policy interventions have closed a gap in health coverage for Hispanics in Pennsylvania, with the uninsured rate dropping from 21 percent to 14 percent in four years. The roundtable will discuss how these gains have been critical to the resurgence of the state’s economy—as well as the upcoming legislative proposals that threaten to undermine its continued growth.

Following the roundtable, Ceiba and NCLR Affiliate Concilio will host a volunteer income tax assistance clinic, where families can get help preparing their 2017 tax return. Refundable tax credits that were made permanent in late 2015 are putting money back in the pockets of middle-class households and the clinic will provide low-cost assistance to help people file on time.

Media are encouraged to attend and should RSVP to Gabriela Gomez at ggomez@nclr.org or (202) 776-1732.
