SUMMARY

UnidosUS is seeking a Media Relations Manager who will be responsible for driving media strategy, project execution, and media results that elevate UnidosUS’s work, our Affiliate Network, and the impact we bring together to communities across the country. The Media Relations Manager will possess and develop strong media relationships and always be on the lookout for opportunities that lead to coverage. They will be able to transform political and civic engagement milestones and data into compelling stories and craft interesting content that goes beyond the press release. This individual will engage with media across all channels on a daily basis. This position requires a dynamic media relations individual who has a passion for thinking outside of the box to create proactive and reactive storytelling opportunities that result in media placements that position the organization as a leader in issues that affect the Latino community. The ideal candidate will be a passionate, strategic, proactive, and solutionoriented team member. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continually seek out and create opportunities to place stories in all types of verticals.
  • Develop and execute media strategies for planned campaigns, breaking news, and news events that lead to ongoing, positive media coverage.
  • Conduct media outreach in support of our issue and priority areas that result in media placements.
  • Build strong relationships with general market and Hispanic national, regional, and trade media, including writing compelling pitches to journalists.
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in issues areas such as health and education.
  • Successfully manage multifaceted projects, such as mobile media tours, event promotion, and cross-platform communication strategies.
  • Successfully manage complex, fast-moving, and unexpected communications challenges.
  • Develop media materials including, but not limited to, press advisories, releases, key messages, fact sheets, opinion pieces, blog posts, and social posts, among others.
  • Identify and propose ways to amplify earned media opportunities/placements on social media and other owned platforms.
  • Provide media relations strategic counsel and guidance to counterparts in assigned issue areas.
  • Work with media to tell the UnidosUS story, highlighting its connection to the community and its Affiliate Network, combat negative stereotypes and misconceptions about the Latino community, and focus on the positive work and accomplishments of the Hispanic community in the United States.
  • Work with programmatic and legislative staff within focus areas to increase awareness about their work and get essential information out to the Latino community through the media sources that reach them.
  • Provide support and assist in tracking and administering the work of the department including the development of end of project media relations reports and institutional quarterly recaps.
  • Provide support in the managing, tracking and evaluation of media placements.
  • Conduct (in conjunction with other communications staff) media training for UnidosUS spokespeople.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field required, or equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Experience using media database systems, such as Cision and Muckrack.
  • Knowledge of legislative process and how the news media/cycle works.
  • Experience with working with media, both proactive and reactive outreach that results in new media relationships, contacts, and placements (general market and Latino market).
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including strong knowledge with AP and Chicago style.
  • Knowledge of best practices for concise and effective writing and editing.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite more specifically, Office 365.

  • Demonstrated experience working in non-profits, community-based organizations, and diverse communities.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to provide responsive, personable, and informed support to UnidosUS writers.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite more specifically, Office 365.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency required.
