We support federal and state sentencing reform legislation

There are over 2.2 million Americans behind bars, the most of any developed country. This is largely due to the reliance on mandatory minimum sentences to punish mostly nonviolent crimes. This has a devastating impact on our community—in 2010, nearly 70% of those convicted of a federal offense carrying a mandatory minimum sentence were Black or Latino.

A fairer and more just system can and must be achieved.

We support state and federal sentencing reform to reduce mandatory minimum and disparate drug sentences. The country agrees—8 in 10 Americans favor eliminating mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders.

We also advocate for enhanced programs and services for ex-offenders to reintegrate successfully into society. These approaches would protect communities, reduce repeat offenses, and strengthen the well being of Latino youth.
