UnidosUS has long played a role in the development and implementation of policies, including the Affordable Care Act, that improve the health of Latinos and people of color.
The coronavirus pandemic has shown how important it is for all people—no matter where they were born or where they live in our country—to have easy access to affordable health care. The pandemic has also exposed long-standing health disparities, with reports showing that low-income people of color are disproportionately impacted.
One meaningful way for us to address these health disparities is to support the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA).
- HEAA is a blueprint of smart, bold policy solutions that eliminate barriers to coverage, expand access to affordable care and strengthen the health care system for all, especially for communities affected by health disparities.
- HEAA is the only legislation that addresses the intersection of health disparities with immigration status, age, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, language, and socio-economic status.
- HEAA ensures that the workforce in the health care sector represents America.
- HEAA addresses gaps in treatment for deadly diseases and mental health issues for people of color.
- HEAA strengthens civil rights and health care protections and ensures that the government is accountable for addressing health disparities.
